Loving-Kindness Practice

This was actually my second time doing the loving-kindness practice. Though I do admit I think it is helping me, I have to admit I can tell I still need practice with it. My mind still wanders quiet a bit. But I did find it calmed me, even though I felt pretty calm to begin with. I am always tense through my shoulders, I am told this is where I hold a lot of my stress, and I could feel them relaxing throughout the practice. I would recommend this to others. I do think it helps to calm stress anxiety throughout the day if practiced regularly. I would just be sure to warn them to be patient with themselves on getting better at it and that the more they practice, the better they should get at it.
The concept of a “mental workout” is to not only use these practices to relax, but also to expand the level of consciousness and healing (Dacher, 2006). In order to reap the highest level of benefits, this workout must be done often or like the physical body, the level of improvement declines. The benefits are a higher level of consciousness, a calmer mind, a more loving heart, cultivation of wisdom, peace, compassion, happiness and wholeness.

Unit 3 Exercise

1.            Based on your reflections, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being optimal wellbeing), where do you rate your A-physical wellbeing, B-spiritual well-being, C-psychological well-being? Why?
A)  I would consider my physical wellbeing a 5 right now because my father was sick for a long time and recently passed and I feel I let my physical well-being slip a little at the time due to stress.
B)  I would rate my spiritual well-being as a 6 because I was not brought up in any religion but have been attending Buddhist classes on spirituality and I feel it has helped me a ton. And I am continuing at the introductory classes and have learned a lot.
C)  Psychologically I would put me at a 3 because I am still dealing with lots of family issues and my mom who is still grieving, then I have a lot of work stress but I am seeing a therapist who is helping me with those issues.

2.            Develop a goal for yourself in each area (physical, spiritual, psychological)
I feel I am currently working on all three levels. I have recently stocked up on fitness classes and DVD’s to increase my exercise, I have joined Weight Watchers and recently found a friend who is on it as well so the social support helps. For spirituality I have been attending introductory classes at the local Buddhist temple and am reading a great spirituality book titled “Untethered Soul.” And psychologically I have been going to a cognitive behavioral therapist every two weeks to address stress issues I have been having due to the recent death of my father on August 13th and all of the family issues that have followed it and she has really been helping me.

3.            What activities or exercise can you implement in your life to assist in moving toward each goal?
I don’t think there are any exercises or activities I can add since I am already doing so many. I think the only additional activity I can add is to go on a relaxing vacation to have time to relax and reflect since I haven’t been on one in so long and I have been through so much recently. I am planning on going somewhere this summer.

4.            Complete the relaxation exercise The Crime of the Century. To hear this exercise, click here. Describe your experience. (What it beneficial? Frustrating? etc.)

My experience with the relaxation exercise was exactly as it says in the title, relaxing. I live in Ohio and it is night time here and we are having a cold blast come through so I did it while laying down snuggled under a blanket so it was difficult to come out of the relaxed state at the end. The frustrating part was when he would ask me to repeat a line when I exhale and almost every time he would suddenly say it again too and cut me off and that would throw me off.

Welcome Message Unit 2

Hello everyone. My name is Tonya and I have the exciting desk job lifestyle of working for an insurance company. Obviously I am kidding about the exciting part. I am not a fan of the desk job lifestyle and hope through getting a degree in health and a personal training certification I can have a more exciting job that includes more physical activity. I am really enjoying the parts of this class that includes topics like spirituality and guided imagery. So far this is turning out to be one of my favorite classes. My experience with the relaxation exercise was very good. I have a lot of stress going on right now so it helped me to slow down the non-stop activity in my mind and ease the tension in my muscles. I really enjoyed it and would love to try more relaxation exercises in the future.
